YouTubers Upset Over ANI’s Fee Demand for Using Videos
Indian YouTubers are raising their concerns about ANI’s aggressive copyright enforcement tactics. The YouTubers are calling out these tactics as burdensome and exploitative.
ANI has been issuing copyright claims against YouTube creators who are using the content without permission and has been demanding licensing fees from ₹15 lakh to ₹40 lakh. These demands have placed significant financial constraints on content creators.
The situation is very complicated because of YouTube’s copyright strike policy. The channels are terminated after they receive three strikes on the channel. This policy leaves the creators with limited options. Creators face the choice of either losing their channels and livelihood or paying the fees.
Mohak Mangal, a renowned YouTuber with over 4 million subscribers, has exposed this ongoing exploitation in a video. The video has over 4 million views, and many creators are supporting Mohak, who has faced similar situations. He quoted that the footage that was used was under “fair use,” which means using copyrighted materials in a way that does not bring any actionable infringement.
Popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee commented on this incident, describing it as an “extortion racket” and urging creators to unite against such practices. Many have urged YouTube to take action against this practice to protect creators who rely on this platform. This issue involves not just financial aspects but also the years of hard work that individuals have invested in their channels.
ANI is one of the largest television news agencies and has previously pressed lawsuits against Press Trust of India and Netflix for alleged copyright infringements. However, the actions against the YouTube creators have sparked a broader debate about the fair usage of content, digital rights, and the balance between protecting intellectual property and creative expression.
This controversy highlights the urgency to set clear guidelines and protections for digital content creators. The complexity of copyright law and vague digital platform policies pose major obstacles for thousands of creators as their livelihood is at stake.
