Rafael Nadal Receives an Emotional Farewell at the French Open

On May 25, 2025, Rafael Nadal received a heartfelt tribute at Roland Garros on Court Philippe-Chatrier. This marked his first French Open not as a competitor, following his retirement in November 2024. The ceremony honoured Nadal’s unparalleled legacy as “the King of Clay,” a title he earned by securing a record 14 French Open titles.

Nadal received a standing ovation from 15000+ audience members who came to witness the gem of tennis. They played a video showcasing his career, which moved the player. Nadal also emphasised his journey: “I Don’t know where to start after playing on that court for the last 20 years, after enjoying, suffering, winning, losing and especially after having felt so many feelings every time I’ve had the chance to be here.”

In his multilingual speech, he expressed gratitude towards France and Paris, quoting, “You have given me emotions and moments I could never have imagined… You made me feel like a Frenchman.”

Fans came in printed t-shirts written “MERCI RAFA” and a mosaic spelling “RAFA” with hearts. This tribute made Nadal speechless and filled with emotions as the glamorous tennis journey came to an end.

Nadal’s fellow court rivals also joined the ceremony; Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray came together in the spirit of camaraderie. At the ceremony, Nadal also emphasised the importance of respect and friendship in tennis and hoped to be remembered for his humility, not just his breathtaking victories.
