The “hitman” of Indian cricket team Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement frm the ttest Cricket on 7th May 2025. The 38-year-old cricketer made the announcement via instagram where he expressed his gratitude for representing India in the longest format. Although, Rohit will continue to play One-Day Internationals. 

Reports suggest that the national selectors were in talks a day prior about the upcoming Test Match series at England at June 20. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was in discussions to appoint a new captain for the upcoming series. 

Ajit Agarkar, the national selector and others were gathered at the inauguration of the new Sachin Tendulkar Room and Sunil Gavaskar Room. However, Rohit was not present. His recent absence in Mumbai Indians match was noticed as well. His retirement came out as a surprise to the BCCI officials and his teammates. 

In his Test career, Rohit played 67 matches and crossed 4000+ runs at an average of 40.57 including 12 centuries. He over captaincy after Virat Kohli in 2022 and led India in  the World Test Championship Final in 2023. 

Shubman Gill is an emerging as a frontrunner and after Rohit’s retirement announcement, selectors aim for Gill to take over captaincy. Gill’s performance over the years has been exceptional. Leading Gujarat Titans at the IPL as Captain has caught selectors attention, given GT’s position in this IPL season. 

“He’s captaining the side really well. One can feel his presence in the dressing room. That’s what you look at in a leader. And he’s been very good with the youngsters as well. He’s passing on his knowledge and spending a lot of time with them.’ said GT’s assistant coach Parthiv Patil on Gill’s leadership performance. 

Rohit’s departure from the Test series marks an end of an era for the Indian Test cricket. His leadership and batting is an inspiration to many aspiring cricket players.
