Just days before its scheduled release on November 7, the upcoming film Haq, starring Emraan Hashmi, Yami Gautam, and Raj Arjun, has landed in controversy. Siddiqua Begum, daughter of Shah Bano Begum, has issued a legal notice to the film’s makers, alleging that her mother’s life story has been used without authorization.
The notice has been sent to director Suparn S. Verma, producers Junglee Pictures and Baweja Studios, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Haq is inspired by the landmark 1985 Supreme Court judgment in the Mohd Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case, which reshaped India’s laws on women’s maintenance rights.
