The Delhi High Court has ordered Amazon to pay $39 million (approximately ₹340 crore) to Lifestyle Equities for infringing upon its ‘Beverly Hills Polo Club’ trademark. This landmark judgment comes after apparels bearing the brand’s logo were found being sold on Amazon’s Indian marketplace.
The verdict highlights concern over counterfeit goods being sold on major e-commerce platforms, raising questions about their impact on genuine brands.
Lifestyle Equities argued that Amazon Technologies was manufacturing and selling products under its in-house brand ‘Symbol,’ featuring the infringing mark. The company also pointed to the involvement of Cloudtail India in facilitating these sales on Amazon.in. The court ruled that the infringing brand belonged to Amazon Technologies and was available for purchase on its Indian platform.
Amazon’s India has yet to issue an official statement on the ruling, although the unit has denied any wrongdoing. This is not the first time the company has faced legal challenges over trademark disputes. Similarly, in 2023, Amazon lost an appeal in the UK for violating British trademarks.
