The third United Nations Ocean Conference will be held in France on 8th June 2025. The event is themed “Ocean Wonders”, coinciding with World Ocean Day. A fleet of research and exploration vessels sailed across the Bay of Angels, emphasising the ocean’s beauty and critical role.

Only 2.7% of the global seas are currently protected, which is below the UN’s target of 30% by 2030. The UN addressed the global emergency that the oceans face, rising temperatures and plastic pollution threatening marine life. Concerns about the marine environment are being raised due to excessive fishing and resource exploitation. The conference focuses on the implementation of the High Seas Treaty and securing commitments on sustainable fishing, plastic pollution, and blue finance.

Thousands of delegates from all around the world have participated in the conference, including heads of state, scientists, and environmentalists. Dr. Jitesh Singh, Union Minister of Earth Sciences, has represented India at the conference, marking a significant step from the Govt of India, a commitment towards global engagement on ocean sustainability and marine cooperation.

“During the general debate at UNOC3, Dr. Jitendra Singh will articulate India’s stance on ocean policy, highlighting the country’s initiatives in marine research, coastal resilience, and regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. India has also sought speaking slots in critical thematic panels, including those on marine pollution and scientific cooperation,” announced the Ministry of Earth Sciences in a press release.
