In the bustling streets of Indian cities, a quiet revolution is underway. This is a significant step towards a future that is both greener and more sustainable. The EV market in India 🇮🇳 is booming, and many companies are coming forward with innovative ideas to promote this sustainable option.
Exponent Energy, a Bengaluru-based startup founded in 2020 by former Ather executive Arun Vinayak and co-founded by Sanjay Byalal Jagannath. Exponent Energy is on a mission to eliminate barriers that hinder the adoption of electric vehicles and provide more sustainable and simple options for a cleaner and greener future.
A journey that fuelled innovation
Arun Vinayak was the Chief Product Officer and Founding Partner at Ather Energy, where he developed one of India’s best-selling scooters, the Ather 450X scooter. During the development process, he encountered the genuine challenges that electric vehicle (EV) users confront. The issues of longer battery charging time, limited charging options, and battery longevity are not just technical hurdles but also represent the real frustrations of people trying eco-friendly options.
Revolutionising the Charging Experience
Understanding these pain points led to the founding of Exponent Energy, which developed an energy stack. Exponent Energy meticulously designed their energy stack for quick EV charging, thereby eliminating the hassle of refuelling, a common issue with traditional vehicles. They designed three components that form a complete system: e^pack, e^pump, and e^plug.
These high-powered charging stations are capable of delivering over 1 MW of power. These stations can charge from 0% to 100% in just 15 minutes. This innovation reduced the waiting time and doubled the income of the people using it. Their more than 100 charging stations are located in four cities in India. As of today, they have deployed over 1100 batteries.
Focusing on the Heartbeat of India
Exponent Energy is primarily focusing on commercial vehicles like three-wheelers and last-minute delivery vehicles, and recently they announced the upcoming rapid bus charging facility. These vehicles are important transportation and logistics solutions for the urban areas. Hence, rapid charging can effectively improve operational excellence. Additionally, it serves as a sustainable method to combat air pollution.
Making EVs Accessible and Affordable
The barriers that were faced in the adoption of EVs are the cost as well as the accessibility. Addressing this problem, the company used lithium-ion cells, which cut the cost by 30% in comparison to its competitors. The compact design promotes efficiency and contributes to lower operational expenses. Therefore, the adoption of this technology becomes more affordable and straightforward.
Building the Infrastructure for Tomorrow
Exponent Energy understood the ground issue and technology and has been actively expanding the charging facilities across India. They have deployed hundreds of charging stations across Bangalore and Delhi-NCR. They are aiming to spread these charging stations across India by 2025. This expansion is necessary to support EV’s rapid expansion in India.
In 2024, the Indian EV market was valued at approximately 8.49 billion. The estimated market will grow by 40% by 2030. Major automobile makers in India are introducing electric vehicles, and people are also considering the options.
Tata Motors, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., Mahindra Group Electric, and many other players are growing their portfolios in this sector. As of March 2025, the EV sales in India 🇮🇳 have surpassed over 1,000,000 units, marking an 18% increase from the previous year 🗓️.
“Bharat is rapidly moving toward electric mobility⚡. To meet the demand of such a large country 🇮🇳, we need to accelerate efforts ⚙️ in battery production and storage capacity,” Prime Minister Modi highlighted in a speech.
Exponent Energy started as a startup and is becoming one of the leading players in the electric vehicle sector for its effective solutions. Exponent Energy is facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles in India and contributing to the reduction of air pollution in the country’s major cities.
