
The government has appointed Poonam Gupta as the Deputy Governer of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the next three years. Gupta will be succeeding Michael D. Patra. Her appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The appointments comes just before the monetory policy committee meeting.
Before this role, Gupta served as the Director General at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). This institution is a premier economic policy research institute in India. She is also the member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and the advisory council to the 16th Finance Commission. She has also worked with The World Bank Group as the Lead Economist.
Gupta also has a vivid career in the academics. She has taught as a lecturer at Hansraj College and Hindu College, University of Delhi. Also led the National Institute of Public Finance (NIPF) as the RBI Chair Professor.
At NCAER, Gupta led research focusing on economic growth, international financial systems, central banking, and more. Her diverse background in policy research, academia, and finance makes her an ideal fit for the role.
