The tension is escalating between the two nations after the terrorist attack at Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where the innocent lives of Indian tourists were lost. The Government of India, in retaliation, suspended the Indus Valley Treaty, and now the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has directed 244 districts across the nation to conduct civil defence drills on 7th May, 2025.
These drills aim to prepare civilians for any potential emergencies and activities that include blackout simulations, activation of air raid sirens, evacuation exercises, and public training sessions. These exercises are designed to test the readiness of civilians and the government systems. It is necessary to check the response to emergencies like war, missile attacks, or aerial strikes.
“The Centre had asked the States and Union Territories to conduct mock drills to evaluate civil defence preparedness. The Home Ministry decided to organise Civil Defence Exercise and rehearsals across the 244 categorised Civil Defence Districts of the country. The conduct of the exercise is planned up to the village level,” shared by News on Air.
The drills are part of a broader plan of civil defence efforts and not a sign that indicates any sort of immediate panic or conflict. These mock drills are conducted to avoid any panic and confusion and save lives, increasing awareness and readiness among the population.
The decision to conduct drills came because of the heightened tension between India and Pakistan. In response to the heightened tensions, Pakistan has also begun conducting missile tests. Countries have suspended trade and closed their airspace to each other. Citizens are affected by these measures.
Authorities have advised the public to stay calm during the drills and to follow local instructions. Keeping the basic supplies like water, medicines and flashlights ready. Also advised to verify any information from the government official channels, not from any unverified social media news.
